About Marilyn...

Marilyn Walter is a contemporary artist whose work is shaped by a rich blend of multicultural influences, personal experiences, and a deep connection to the world around her. Born in Bakersfield, California, Walter's early life in Kuwait and Iran sparked a passion for exploration and a lifelong curiosity about the intersections of culture, identity, and expression.
Walter attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ, and furthered her studies at Bank Street/Parsons and through multiple Summer Residency Programs at the School of Visual Arts, NYC. Currently based in West Palm Beach, FL, Walter continues to push the boundaries of her creative process. Her new painting series explore her ongoing engagement with nature and the surrounding environment, where her nude body becomes seen. She becomes both the seen and the seer.
Community Arts and Professional support are both integral to her art career and education. She has facilitated numerous collaborative art projects, and her teaching role at Mounts Botanical Garden allowed her to share her expertise in sketching and watercolor techniques with budding artists. Walter was a Resident with the Makor/Steinhardt Center, NYC, a team member of the Social Engagement HomeBase IV Project, NYC, and Artist in Resident at The Hacklab, Boynton Beach, FL.

Artist Statement / CV
Nature has always lived at a distance in my life. After moving through thirty-one cities and towns, often surrounded by concrete, I rarely experienced a sense of belonging. Settling in West Palm Beach and volunteering at a local preserve, that distance is dissolving. The preserve is reshaping my art practice and my understanding of how to exist within a place. I am learning how to be changed by what I am learning to love.
Wallace Steven's idea of becoming what surrounds me has become a touchstone for my practice. I paint and sketch my nude body immersed in ponds, swamps, forests, and the ocean. These works are not portrayals of nature but records of transformation. I am not a lifelong naturalist but a student, learning from the preserve's educators. Listening for the mysterious daily logic of wetlands, forests, swamps, oceans, and the wildlife that sustain one another.
My excitement comes from seeing these small, often overlooked worlds unfold right in front of me. Each visit teaches me what it means to pay attention and, through that attention, what it means to belong.
